She Knew The World

she dyed her hair as dark as she felt
ugly and the fog descent
and red eyes played at being stoplights
but she knew
that outside the car window strangers
walked black silhouetted
in their dead shoes beside
bones protruding from the soil
white thin crooked
almost like a lamppost but no,
that field was a graveyard
she knew
the mist that shrouded covered
lies and shouldered truth into the
watered light, where witches flew
below the moon yellow
and the stars extinguished
one might swear the fog
was only a cloud at ground level
but she knew the world
was toothy large
a monster
and no one heard her
cry out
